I went on the 15-miler that I was too sleepy to run yesterday. Went up towards the Monument and then along a canal path. There were a bunch of signs that said no trespassing. Those signs didn't bother me as much as the Beware of Dog signs, but I think they were referring to the property backing up to the canal. Either way, I didn't get bit.

I felt pretty good running today but I feel like I'm still in survive the winter mode. Pretty soon I need to start running harder more consistently.

So it begins. I had a free Saturday in Grand Juncton, so I went for my first long run for Boston. I started with my 10-mile loop up 1st ave, then I did the 10-mile out-and-back up Monument Road. I finished up with a 5-mile loop in town. The .5 was an accident.

I actually felt pretty good for the first long run of the season. It helped that I had nothing to do the rest of the day but lay around and recover.

I went to a trailhead at the bottom of the Colorado National Monument and started running. Shortly my running turned into hiking. And then my hiking started to turn into mountaineering. When I found myself on a sheet of ice, sliding backwards, with a cliff to my right and a rock wall to my left, I decided that it was time to turn back.

Back at the trailhead I took another trail that went along the bottom of the monument. A good hard run after a recovery day. And and adventure.

Instead of running up Monument Road, I went over to Little Park Rd. It was a lot steeper, but the payoff was huge with some great views. When I was about 4 miles into it, I saw a trail heading off the road and I couldn't resist. It was a good climb along sand and rocks. I ended up at a hanging rock with a sign that said "Free Lunch" and a great view of the canyon. Not sure what the free lunch thing was about, but I turned around there and headed back down the hill to the hotel. One more day in this burgh before flying out for the last time.

Decent morning run. Thermometer read 40. I felt colder than that. They've torn up Cloverdale and I almost killed myself running through the construction. Ok, not killed, but I went over a drop-off that I didn't see and almost went down. Then I stepped in some deep, soft mud getting back over to the sidewalk. 700+ miles and caked in mud. I ran well and felt pretty good until about mile 19. I started getting dizzy, so I turned up Mitchell instead of going all the way to Cole. I started feeling better, so I went up to Edna and down Shamrock. I was at 26.2 when I got to the house and that seemed like a good place to stop. I thought about going back out for 3 more miles, but changed my mind.

So I decided to call it done at 20.

Then, of course, I felt guilt for the rest of the day. But, I figure that if I consider a 20-miler to be phoning it in, I must be doing something right.

Last run in CA. I took yesterday off because we went back to the park. I went South down the river trail. At about the 4 mile mark, I approached an underpass and saw a shopping cart in the middle of the path with a homeless guy next to it. I didn't want to deal with him, so I went up and crossed the street. As I darted across the street, I hooked the iPod cord and it came off. So I'm standing on the other side of a busy street staring at my iPod in the middle of the road, expecting to see it destroyed any second now. When the traffic broke, I ran back across, scooping up the ipod along the way.

Other than that, the run was solid, but uneventful.

6,600 feet elevation and windy. When I first went out, I realized that the wind was really cold, so I went in and put on another top layer. Then I got out and ran with the wind and got kind of hot. With the wind and downhill out, against the wind and uphill back. So it wasn't such a great run.

I read somewhere that Dean Karnazes can run and pee at the same time. I was on an empty road in the middle of nowhere, so I decided to give it a try. I'll just say it was a bad idea and leave it at that.

5pm

20 miles, Pace: 8:00

I did two 10-mile loops. The first was strong, holding my marathon goal pace of 7:30. The last 10 were rougher. I slowed down into the 8s after mile 12 and even had a 9 minute mile 18.

Now it's time to taper. I'll probably do 7s and 5s for the next week and a half.

Race: Boston Marathon (26.2 Miles) 04:11:33
Total Distance
26.20

The Boston Marathon was a great experience and a brutal race. I followed the plan for the first half, but the heat got to me and it all fell apart.

I was nervous about the heat, but things started out great. I was in the last corral of Wave 1 and hung with the pack for the first few miles down the hills. Making sure I didn't go out too fast. I was really enjoying myself at a comfortable 7:30 pace, soaking it in, high-fiving the little kids along the route.

Water stations were placed every mile on the course and I made sure that I drank at least one cup of water or Gatorade at each station. Most of the time I drank a Gatorade and half of the water and then poured the rest of the water over my head. Seemed like a good plan.

I knew I was in trouble by the halfway point. That's the earliest I've ever started having problems (except for that Potato Marathon when I ran sick). I could tell that the heat was affecting me, but I felt like I was doing all that I could to deal with it shy of dropping out or walking.

Some time after mile 20 I did end up walking some. I ran all the way up heartbreak hill just because I'm stubborn and wanted to be able to tell myself that I did it. When I got past Newton the last few miles got really rough. I was feeling short of breath and my vision was kind of foggy. As I passed Fenway Park I was feeling pressure on my chest. I wanted to push through and just deal with it, but I was getting kind of scared. My thought was "suppose I drop dead and leave my kids without a dad just because I want to finish the Boston Marathon under 4 hours. How selfish is that?" So I walked a bit more. When I got to Boyleston Street I was really feeling crappy, but I only had a quarter mile left and I wasn't going to walk the final stretch of the Boston Marathon.

When I crossed the finish line, I held my hands up and smiled for the camera and then started staggering. One of the medical staff grabbed my arm and helped me along for a ways. Then I told him that I thought I was ok and walked further and got some water, my shiny blanket and medal. I'm walking further along and really feel like I need to sit down. So I drop down on the curb and shortly someone tells me that I need to keep walking, so I do ... about 25 yards to a trash can where I lean over expecting to puke. A medical guy comes by and asks me how I am. I tell him I think I need to throw up and that I'm having trouble breathing. So he calls over a wheelchair and they push me over to the medical tent. I keep my head down, partly because it feels a little better and partly because I'm feeling like a pathetic loser.

In the tent they lay me down and put a shiny blanket over me, check my vitals and call for an IV. The IV never arrived, but after 30 minutes or so I decide that I'm feeling better. They offer me Gatorade and I tell them that I've had so much warm Gatorade that I probably will throw up if I try to drink any more. So I drink some more water and try to walk around. I feel ok. The doctor checks me out and while he's asking me questions I say I think I need to sit down again. So I sit a little longer and then go through the walking around and talking to the doctor drill again. I tell him that now I feel like I usually do after a marathon, so he clears me and I leave, pick up my bag and call Paige, who has been waiting with my dad at the family waiting area this whole time.

Even though the race turned out to be a mess for me, there was a whole lot of good about it.

_ It was a great weekend. Expo on Friday, sightseeing and a trip to Hopkinton on Saturday, and a nice drive to Sharron, Vermont on Sunday to stay off of my feet.
_ The crowds were awesome. Spectators almost the whole way. The crowds downtown and the students at Welsley and BC were great, but I think I preferred the small towns with lots of little kids cheering along the way. Or, maybe I just liked that part better because I didn't feel like death yet.
_ Seeing my wife and my dad cheering me on at mile 25. They said I looked good. I think they were just being nice.
_ All of the volunteers were really nice, especially in the medical tent.
_ I qualified for and ran the Boston Marathon and have a cool little medal to prove it.

I'm feeling better now. I even had a double hamburger with bacon and cheese with fries for dinner. It has been a while since I've indulged like that. It was awesome.

Congrats on getting there & surviving the hottest Boston Marathon on record! I was following online and could tell that you were headed for trouble after the half just by how much everyone else, including the elites, were slowing down. Sounds like you had a great experience and maintained a good perspective. Rest up and we'll see you out there soon. Travel safe.

12:41pm

Pace: 7:53

I was running the last leg for our van, so I was able to see the rest of the team dying in the heat. I was a little worried. We didn't manage that transition very well, arriving there very shortly before our runner, so I had to hurry to get myself ready and run to the handoff point. I took the wristband and took off. After a little ways I looked down and saw that my pace was 6:15. Way too fast for 95 degrees. I slowed down some but held a decent pace most of the way. There was a pretty big hill in the middle of the route and when I crested it I was at an even 8mpm. I was able to make up some time going back down, but it was dang hot. I carried a water bottle and had the guys in the van replenish it with cold water several times because it got warm so fast.

They changed the legs so that mine was shorter and Wil's was longer. But, since he was running double legs, we traded. This run was at night on a trail through the bear-infested forest, running toward the town of New Meadows. I had my headlamp pointed down and the spot of light started sending me into the twilight zone. Once I tilted it back up I started feeling better.

We then headed to a cabin to shower and nap before meeting up with the others at the finish line.

Ok, so my wife and I are big Dan Patrick Show fans. We both work at home and have it on the TV every morning. So, since I was in the area, I thought I'd make my pilgrimage to the town where the make the DP show. I worked late again Friday night and then drove down to CT and checked into the hotel at about 3am. Even though I didn't get a whole lot of sleep, I felt pretty good and had a great run. I went down to the ocean and ran along the boardwalk by the beach then through the streets of the town. Very nice and quaint. Then on the Main street I stopped and took some photos of the DP studio building and ran back through town to the hotel.

Afterward I went to the Yale Bowl and watched them get beat by Colgate.
