It was a pretty wild day. Got in to Logan after 8pm. Picked up the packet, checked into the hotel and grabbed some dinner. Rode the bus up, sat in the tent and off we went.
Going down the canyon went right as planned. Held about a 7:18 pace according to my watch, which is a little suspect since I kept losing ground every mile. By the end of the race, my watch was about a half-mile off. I need to do some tests this week on a track to see if the watch is jacked.
But anyway, felt really good going down and for several miles outside of the canyon. My goals were #1 BQ under 5 minutes (3:20), #2 BQ (3:25), #3 Top of Utah PR (3:38).
I started to slow a bit around mile 22 and I also realized that relying on the pace showing on my Garmin watch wasn't going to work, so I started doing the math in my head (if I can hold a 8 min pace, I get this, if I can hold a 9 min pace, this ...). Probably a bad idea because I'm bad at math and it started to make me a little bit crazy in the head.
Just after mile 23 I saw the family and my 14-year-old daughter ran with me for a couple of miles and then peeled off to meet me at the finish line.
I wasn't feeling very good by the time I crossed the finish line, but if you are feeling good you haven't done it right. Pretty happy with my time. Met goal #2 and #3. BQed by 1:30 which might be good enough to get in for 2016 if I decide to do that, plus I've got another year to try again.
I saw my daughter at the finish line and then she left to watch for our neighbor Joe with the rest of the family. I hung out in the corall area. My legs were really aching for about 20 minutes. Joe finished at 4:02 and we took pictures, etc.
Then we went back to the hotel, I cleaned up, we hit the Chick-fil-a drive-through and headed down to Provo for the game. Got there just before halftime. Had great seats, watched the Cougs beat UVA and had a great time.
Awesome day.
